About Us

Our Mission

HANKERING FOR MORE was established in 2002 to provide stimulating and dynamic social opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and other mild cognitive limitations. These adults have virtually been left out of society’s social network and HANKERING FOR MORE seeks to fill this large gap.

There are many social and recreational groups for people with physical and severe cognitive impairments and for people without disabilities. However, adults with mild cognitive limitations do not “fit in” with members of these organizations. As a result, participation in existing groups is generally not comfortable or enjoyable.

Agencies that do provide support for people with mild cognitive disabilities generally offer vocational and residential guidance, not social and recreational assistance. Or, these agencies provide recreational services for school-age children or senior citizens – leaving the “in-between” adults to find their own way.

HANKERING FOR MORE provides this large segment of our community with the opportunity to meet their peers, strengthen their socialization skills and enjoy recreational activities in an intellectually and socially exciting environment.

We are pleased to report that we are reaching our goals. Our members are gaining self-confidence, creating friendships and establishing active social lives. Our participants regualrly speak on the phone, email and socialize independent of our sponsored events. In addition, our success has been recognized by others - we have grown from 7 participants at our first event to a roster of over 50 active members and we are continuing to grow every month.

About Our Name

HANKERING FOR MORE was established by Jennifer Geiling and named for her brother-in-law Hank. Hank has cognitive limitations due to developmental disabilities. Like many young adults, Hank seeks to increase his independence and expand his social opportunities. Jennifer’s family was unable to find social outlets through which Hank could meet other people with similar limitations in a stimulating environment. HANKERING FOR MORE was created to provide both social and educational opportunities designed specifically for people like Hank.
